I stumbled across this recent article from another one on the BBC News site this morning. news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/4265600.stmHere are just a few of the facts : Doctors warn that any amount of smoking is dangerous. Smoking just one to four cigarettes a day almost triples a person's risk of dying of heart disease, according to Norwegian researchers. Their work suggests the health impact is stronger for women and that even "light" smokers face similar diseases to heavier smokers, including cancer. Among women, smoking one to four cigarettes daily increased the chance of dying from lung cancer almost five times. So-called "light" smokers were also found to have a significantly higher risk of dying from any cause - 1.5 times higher generally - than those who had never smoked, when researchers looked at deaths among those studied over the duration of the research.

You know, nobody stops because of the health risks. People stop if they are already being affected by health problems and continuing to smoke is making it worse, or they stop because they cant afford to smoke anymore, or they stop because their family all have a go at them every time they light up and theyre sick of having to stand outside. Etc. Smokers dont stop because theyre worried about heart disease.

I understand what you say Kirsty, but i was still pretty shocked to read that even light smoking increased the chances of health problems considerably.

Kirky one is bad enough you knoooow YOU WILL DIE EARLY Awwwh Kirky, I bet you'll start smoking more and more though I wont start smoking more and more, I wont let myself. If I'm going to smoke, I'm not going to go more than one a day at most. I know one a day is bad enough... but really when you are actually smoking, you really couldnt care less how much damage you are doing to your health. I know I will care if I end up with lung cancer or something but despite the fact that I used to go on at people about the health risks, when you do smoke, that's the last thing you're worried about How would you feel when someone else breathes in your smoke and dies?

Manoj one breath of smoke won't kill you. Its when you live with smokers for years and years that it becomes a problem

Yes if you smoke around people alot then you can damadge them but they can always just move away. As long as you don't literally MAKE them sit there and breathe it in then the only stupid thing your doing is harming yourself

Why do you have an answer for everything? It is quite clear that there is a divide among people regarding smoking. I am a non-smoker but I certainly do not have a problem with people who do. It is their choice, not yours.
If you don't want to breathe in other people's smoke, then don't sit near them. Not everyone who go to pubs smoke, they don't whinge about it.
With all due respect Manoj, you seem hell bent on wanting to complain about almost everything. The real world out there might come as a great shock to you.

Eeeefie, Manoj might be a little brutal with his point, but passive smoking does pose a significant health risk too. I know a lot of pubs and restaurants are having smoke free areas now, and i agree with that idea as i've never liked sitting in a smoke filled bar, and coming out with my clothes all smelly. There's also the issue that while sitting there, there's all the smoke i've breathed in too, probably the equivalent to smoking a few cigarettes myself.
Despite what i may have said on this thread, i don't have a problem with people who choose to smoke either. I do agree with Yasmin's point that it is THEIR choice and we cannot influence where and when they do so, and yes we can choose not to sit near them if we want too, even if as non smokers we don't think we should be the ones who have to move.

Yes but if someone wants to smoke, its thier decision and if it bothers you THAT much, and if they care about it and are worried about passive smoking, they can move. I know alot of smokers wouldnt want to put anyone at that risk but I still think its stupid for people to sit, in the smoke and not say anything and then later go 'She was blowing smoke ALL over me' Your the one who bloody sat in the smoke!!
